Management Women began in September 1983 as the Bay Area Chapter of Women in Management. Dorothy Gallagher, of U.S. Paper Mills, and Chris Neumann, of First Wisconsin Bank, along with 13 charter members, founded the organization as a way to share ideas and experiences as professional women. Women in Management, a national organization, gave them a framework for their endeavor.
In July 1985, the organization changed its name to Management Women and became an independent organization. Within two years, Management Women included more than 100 women. The growth warranted a need for the organization to develop member guidelines, which remain in place today.
Our benefit today is a membership base of professional, involved women who represent a balance of the many talents management requires.
Focus Through the Years
The focus of Management Women has always been the development and networking of professional women. How that is accomplished has been constant with monthly luncheons, fundraisers, and after hours events.
Monthly luncheons, held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, provide education and an opportunity to network with women in the community.
Seminars provide the same education and networking in a more formal environment. What started as two annual seminars is now an annual fall event, HHH, and includes a fundraiser which supports scholarships for women seeking higher education.
After Hours events for members began in 1985 and continue today, with members enjoying outside-of-work events such as bus trips to Kohler, Wisconsin, wine and cheese tasting, and more.
Management Women Today
With membership of over 150, our mission of promoting professional growth and development of women, by women, remains strong. And we look forward to a future of continued growth, both in membership and in the knowledge and personal growth of our individual members.
Becoming a Member
Membership in Management Women, Inc is open to those persons who are employed full-or part-time, are in transition, between jobs or are retired and have been responsible for the recognized management functions of leadership, planning, organizing and motivating their respective area of responsibility regardless of the size of their organization or field of endeavor.
